What is the Love of God?

Love is patient, love is kind,. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always preservers. Love never fails…” 1 Corinthians 13:4-7

The love of God is love. Everything in the bible is about allowing ourselves to be loved by God, loving God, and loving others. After Jesus’s disciples asked which was the greatest commandment, he replied, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment and the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself’. All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments. Matthew 22: 37-40.

Love is the greatest purpose. We have a creator that adores, cherishes, and longs to be with his creation. God expresses his love as being a mother hen gathering all her chicks under his wings. We are described as the apple of God’s eye. Because of God’s deep love for us and longing for fellowship and unison, He made a way to restore life among us through Christ. We all choose between acts of love and hatred. We fight desperately to gain love. We are loved. We love others. 1 John 4:16 “…God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in him.”

To know and accept that someone loves you. 1 John 4:10 This is love; not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. 1 John 3:16 This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers.

Love looks past the fault and sees the need, just like the old Dottie Rambo song says. Love is unconditional.  Love is all things in all ways that illustrates itself. It is the purest and most innate attribute, not only in humanity but among the entirety of the earth’s inhabitants. 1 Thessalonians 3:12 May the Lord make your love increase and overflow for each other and for everyone else, just as our does for you. 1 Peter 1:22 Now that you have purified yourself by obeying the truth so that you have sincere love for your brothers, love one another deeply, from the heart.

Living love doesn’t mean you have to be mushy and sweet all the time. Love has many ways of helping and supporting others, some of these mean being brave and making hard decisions, putting yourself and others above hurtful circumstances or relationships, or it’s working day in day out, getting that dinner on the table and kids dressed, and lunches made. God’s love is available one hundred percent of the time. The love of God fulfills and fortifies the heart and ambitions. 2 Thessalonians 3:5 May the Lord direct your hearts into God’s love and Christ’s perseverance.

1 John 3:11 This is the message you have heard from the beginning; We should love one another.
